History

With its location along the Colorado River, La Grange was used as a river crossing back when Texas was a Spanish providce. The earliest American settlers in the area were a band of colonists, led by Stephen F. Austin, who arrived in 1822. One of the earliest buildings was a blockhouse that is known today as Moore's Fort, so named for Colonel John Henry Moore.

The community grew around Moore's Fort, leading to the plotting of the town in 1837 as the county seat for Fayette. The town was named in honor of Chateau de la Grange-Blenau, which was the name of the castle where the Marquis de Lafayette lived in France.

La Grange is home to several locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Nathaniel W. Faison House, Fayette County Courthouse and Jail, and Henry L. Kreische Brewery and House. The city is also known for serving as the name and subject for a hit 1973 song by rock band ZZ Top.
